Sodium Met contact time?

Post by Wooderson » Thu Sep 30, 2010 5:08 pm

Hi, i've been told that Sodium Met is a contact sanitizer which they claimed that it would sanitize on contact and could be rinsed of instantly, is this true? It was used in the production of wine if that makes a difference.

Thanks

It doesn't sanatise as such, I use it to neutralise my chlorine based cleaner although it does help keep the bugs at bay. I don't bother rinsing since I always like having a trace amount of Sod Met in my wort. Just tip it out before use.

Ok, it's just I saw a video where a guy was spraying it in his bottles and rinsing immediately, I didn't think any santitizer was that quick acting.

Seems a bit odd. If you want a decent no rinse sanitiser go with something like idophor.

Sodium Met as a sanitiser is seriously old skool. Back then there was no interweb and very little info available so many home brewers "sanitised" with sodium met solution with an added teaspoon of citric acid. You soon learned not to breath in the gas...

I've no idea how effective it was but I used the method for a decade and failed brews were very rare (and not necessarily a fault with the sanitiser). In these enlightened times I think it is quite far down the league table of sanitisation methods,

All I use is Chempro and Sod. Met. and I've never had any problems with infection (touch wood). Although saying that I don't think of it as a sanitiser but more an effective method against chlorine in the water.

It was actually Craigtube who I saw using it in his margerita wine video, with him having alot of followers he shouldn't really be passing on dud information.Has there been any lab based studies on the effectiveness of sodium met as a sanitizer?

Not that I know of. G.W's book does cover it, good for use as a light sterilant but he does state it's not very good against gram negative bacteria. I use a ten percent solution in a squeezy bottle, that goes way back to Dave Line et al. in the 70's.

I wouldn't rinse it off with water though, seems a bit pointless.
