New Tubing - Removing odour

Post by elwolfio » Mon Nov 29, 2010 2:43 pm

I got some new tubing a week or so ago from aquarium supplies for use when transferring to bucket or bottles.

The pipes had a strong TCP odour before use so I washed in dishwasher, sterilised and rinsed obviously.

I used to transfer my Coopers Cerveza and when i sampled strong taste of TCP. Needless to say batch of Cerveza ruined.

I'm since soaked in bleach solution twice. Soaked in Isopropryl as well. But the odour still remains on the pipes.

I'm paranoid now about using the piping. How can i make sure it doesnt happen again.

As mentioned I've got VWP, sodium metabisulphate, and isopropyl I can use.

Any suggestions?

New syphon tubing is cheap as chips - just get some food grade from either homebrew shop or online from barley Bottom or similar.

If this came from aquarium suppliers is it definitely food grade? I've NEVER had smell in tubes before so I'd chuck that and spend a whole pound on new tubing instead of more money on cleaners and ruined batches.

+1 on the food grade thing.

If you are determined to use it then give it a few hours in a bicarb of soda solution. You'll probably find some bicarb in the baking cupboard in the kitchen.

Also, the TCP taste could indicate an infection in the beer rather than a problem with the tubing.

I think I'm going to get some food grade tubing. Its Cheap enough.

When i sampled prior to bottling/Barrell it tasted fine. The both the bottles and the 10l in the barrel smell and taste the same as the tubing (Nearest comparism is TCP I can think of).

Up until now i've attatched tubing to the tap at the bottom of the FV bucket - is this method ok. I've never actually syphoned - does this matter?

I've ordered some food grade tubing now. Presumably i just need to sterilise before use when it arrives?

Yup - sterilise and you're away.
