Sterilising finings?

Post by spearmint-wino » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:50 am

Is it necessary to sterilise finings before adding them to the keg? I'm guessing the answer is yes...

A brew ago or so I tried mixing some BeerClear gelatine liquid with beer, boiled it, smelled it and thought 'no bloody way that's going in', so just mixed the finings straight from the bottle with some beer, poured it in, it cleared the beer and didn't seem to have an adverse effect (that I could tell).

Is there a better way to go about making sure you don't introduce nasties when adding finings that doesn't invovle the 'unique' flavour & aroma of boiled-down cow?

cool, thanks.

I've only got 1 'serving' left in the current bottle so I'll use as I did last time and just mix with beer and pour it in.

Good tip for the next lot though.
