Baby cleaning fluid

Post by oldtimer » Fri Jul 01, 2011 4:50 pm

I have read most of these threads on this topic, but I am still a bit confused.
It's my age ya know ( that's my excuse).
I have just been given some ' Jeyes Baby Care ' ( brand name) sterilising fluid.
It says it's for cleaning babies bottles and teats, and kills germs such as E.coli. listeria ( I thought that was a blue flower that grew across your house) and Salmonella. The only ingrediants listed are " Less than 5% Sodium Hypochlorite ".

My question is, would this be safe to use to sterilse my brewing equipment without tainting or spoiling the beer.

This VWP stuff can get rather expensive.

--------------------------------
drinking
Woodfords Wherry,
Muntons Premium Stout ( Not at the sametime)
and Muntons Premium Lager ( when I have to.)

Brewing Woodfords Nelsons revenge.

This is my last kit effort, I am joining the big boys next and brewing with the real stuff.

Sodium hypochlorite is bleach as far as I remember. I'm sure it'd do the job, though I'm not sure how it'll be cheaper than even VWP.
Personally I use half a cup of bleach (thin Tesco Value) per 5 gallons of water (rinse well afterwards) for killing off the nasties.

Bleach is cheap, but Starsan is quicker :)

The reason I ask this question is that I have been given a shed load of this baby stuff.

Is 'Starsan' available in supermarkets or where ? and do I need to rinse after using ' Starsan'.

Forgive my ignorance but I am new to this and an oldie to boot so the ole' brain don't work as fast as some of you young'uns.

Still drinking the 'Wherry' and the Muntons Stout.

Suppose I still gotta drink this Lager but only when I have had a few of the Wherry, then I don't know what I am drinking.
Only made the Lager for my grandson and son-in-law but the grandson has moved out, maybe it was the larger that did it. #-o #-o

Starsan is a no rinse cleaner/sanitiser, that's why a lot of home brewers like it. Not going to be available at the supermarket though, try online, it'll be the only place you can find it.

Baby sterilising fluid is fine for disinfecting home brewing stuff.

Not a good 'cleaner' though, stuff should be clean before use.

[-X NO! Starsan is a sanitiser only . . .Everything needs to be clean before you use starsan! :)

In fact everything needs to be clean before you use any sanitiser

I got my starsan here

http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... _454g.html

I also bought some re-usable plastic caps so when I've rinsed a bottle out after pouring I have some Starsan mixed in a spray bottles, give it a few squirts and stick the cap on. Come bottling day I take the cap off, tip the Starsan into a bowl containing my Crown Caps, and they're good to go, no rinsing required. This method was suggested to me by Beer O'Clock and I owe him a debt of grattitude, it's made my bottling days so, so much quicker and easier =D>

The Starsan seems expensive at first, but it really does go a long, long way. It's re-usable for as long as the liquid is clear, but for the amount used I can't be bothered so I'll just mix some more! I'm still on the first lot (think it's 6ml Starsan in 2 litres of water but might be wrong) and I've done three brews with it.
