Bottling with peracetic acid

Post by kane » Thu Aug 11, 2011 8:38 pm

Hey guys,
So i'll be getting my next brew on sometime shortly, and have decided on moving to no rinse sanitisers.
I think im going to try peracetic acid from the malt miller.

I have seen the bottle rinsers that cost about £10/15, but is there a cheaper method people use?

Will simply putting a few sprays of the stuff into the bottles work?
How about filling a bottle using a funnel then keep transferring this onto the next bottle? Would the peracetic acid still be effective by the end?

Any other no rinse tips are welcome :D

Cheers
Kane

Not sure what you mean by a bottle rinser. I use a thing that sprays the dilute peracetic acid into the bottle when you press a bottle down on it and the peracetic acid then drains back into the bowl of the sprayer. It works a treat.

I fill a small kitchen-type jug with sanitizer, and fill about 1/4 of the bottle, let it sit for a few moments while I fill more bottles, then invert bottle back into the jug (so that the neck is under the level of the sanitizer) swirl it all around to coat the entire inside surface and drain the bottle, rest the bottles up-side-down on a rack and it's done, no need for anything mechanical, difficult or expensive..

I use a bottle rinser (the red chappy.)

Really useful bit of kit and well worth the investment imho. Added bonus is that the kids love using it, so we can get a bit of a production line going on bottling day.

We use it at work, and get through the best part of a pallet of bottles a week.
