Hey guys,
So for my latest brew i decided to try peracetic acid.
How do people sterilise things like syphon tubing and budget barrels?
Would pouring some into the barrel and giving it a shake around do the job adequately?
Cheers

Peracetic Acid + Budget Barrel
Re: Peracetic Acid + Budget Barrel
Yes mate exactly what I do,mix up a 250ml solution of PA tip it in the barrel give it a good swirl around then empty this back into the spray bottle and squirt some solution in the syphon tube, then I just tip the tube up and down so the solution makes contact with all the inside surfaces of the tube, and finally spray the outside of the tube, all done in a few minutes.kane wrote:Hey guys,

Syphon tubes I rinse out after use then fill with peracetic acid solution and seal ready for use next time
And yes add a small amount of peracetic acid solution to the barrel, seal and shake several times over 10 -15 minutes

Small bungs or The Appropriate sized John Guest Hose to Tube adapter with an appropriate connector . . . . I leave the hose to tube adapters in place as most of my vessels have John guest outlets / inlets on them
Re: Peracetic Acid + Budget Barrel
Today i decided to keg the beer after 3 days in primary (yes this is probably a bit quick, but its only a 2 gallon test, and it had just about reached FG).
So i put 250ml of peracetic into the barrel, put the lid on and started shaking.
The pressure relief then starts hissing for about 5 seconds (good to know it works), so then it got me wondering, what was the peracetic acid reacting with?
If it was just it breaking down into acetic acid + hydrogen peroxide, then shouldnt it do this continually (therefore longer more than 5 seconds worth of gas). Or was it reacting with the water or something else in the barrel?
(The barrel was warm, after rinsing with warm water.)
Just curious
