Idophor - Does it keep?

Post by SteveD » Thu Apr 26, 2007 8:33 pm

I make up brupaks Idophor according to their recommended concentration:- 2.5ml/500ml water, which fills my plant sprayer nicely. The question is: does the solution have a 'shelf life' once put in the sprayer?

It keeps very well. I use Betadine and have a Corny keg full that I use for sanitising. I push it from keg to keg using CO2 so that I have a keg full of CO2 when I want to fill it with beer.

The rule I use is "As long as its brown its effective"

Betadine will keep for a while if its out of sunlight, and there's no minerals in the water. For most brits, this is pretty much going to be a show stopper.

Even then, most of the times i've mixed up a betadine solution its gone clear and lost its odor after about 24 hours.

It lasts for months in the fridge (apparently, the light goes off when you close the door)

Blimey! My keg of Betadine has been in the shed for 6 months! Still brown and smelling of hospitals  Must admit that its in the dark, cool and the water is very soft

And in a corny, which has gotta shield it from nasties.

Perhaps the volume keeps it from deteriorating also. Perhaps it would be worth putting some in another corny, but just like a liter or something.
