Peracetic Acid vs Iodophor

Hello all i have acquired some peracetic acid but just wondering is peracetic acid a better steriliser than iodophor  probably one for Dr Steve-Flack

Neither are sterilsers, but they both sanitise effectively. The spec sheets for peracetic quote similar contact times for iodophor unless youare using it in a mist applciation and then it is effectively instantaneous. According to the literature, then minimum contact time for iodophor is 2 minutes

Just found the D Values for the compounds

at 12.5ppm iodine the DValue is 5 minutes
at 25ppm the DValue is 3 minutes

above 25ppm the DValue actually increases!!

for peracetic the DValues are as follows

at 0.2 % (WHAT!!) the dvalue is 1 minute
at 0.5 % the dvalue is 0.5 minutes

what is this dvalue thingy it is the time taken to reduce the microbe count by a value of 10. How many DValues are required for effective sanitisation? according to best lab practice at least three D Values, so for 12.5ppm iodine you need 5 times 3 or 15 minutes.

Personally I like peracetic for no rinse work, and if I'm sanitising a number of kegs I'll make up 20L of it, if its one or two kegs I'll use the iodophor. Certainly according to the figures peracetic is more effective, but look at the concentration stated, much higher than is recomended by Murphy in the spec sheet.

The literature says 2 minutes because that's the smallest sanitizing window the EPA tests for. Other authorities differ i guess. Pericetic is a fantastic sterilizer. It's what the professional breweries use.

I have access to the stuff, but i am happy with iodophor (Or acidified bleach! *shakes fist*) for most things.
