PET bottles - always residual odour of previous contents ?

Post by poo hed » Thu Feb 02, 2012 2:29 am

hello,

i wash out bottles after drinking, then sanitise and rinse them, then rinse them out with water again before bottling if it has been a while, but they still retain a vague smell of beer right up until bottling; is this always normal for pet bottles?, i recently read i maybe should up the concentration of sanitising solution i use (i use vwp)?.

i do not just want to be cloaking the "beer" smell, with that of vwp, what defines the smell of a "clean" PET bottle ?

does pet always inherit the smell of it's contents ? (like coke bottles), or am i not doing a good enough job of cleaning / sanitising ?

thankyou!

EDIT: i did leave dregs in them for an extended period one time (lazy bastard), could this have caused it ?

I use Milton and leave them overnight before re-using. Can't say I've ever noticed a lingering smell. After a couple of rinses, they smell of nothing which is how I would describe the smell of a clean bottle.

have you ever re-used a 2 litre coke bottle ? and if so did you manage to get the smell out of that the first time of using ?

i thought with pet being porous they can have some smell without necessarily being unsanitary :?

Pour in some thin neat bleach, shake it all about. Repeat the shaking a few minutes later.
Rinse out in cold water.

Trust me you won't smell coke anymore.

I use an empty A & W bottle to gauge the process of bottle conditioning. I soak it in an oxy cleaner solution and never get a smell.
I'm just here for the beer.
