Hi All
Just got a couple of cornys from Norm.
I'll be getting some starsan for future use but I'm wondering if chemipro oxi is ok to use as a sanitizer?
I've been using it for a while now on my mini kegs and never had a problem. It is advertised as a no-rinse cleaner/sanitizer but I've read that most people use plain unscented oxi stuff to clean then sanitize afterwards. The chemipro stuff is supposed to be a mix of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide if that's of any help?
Cheers Tom

Does the package say what it's actually is made from?
Brupaks suggest "sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide" however I'm almost certain it's Sodium Percarbonate (as are most 'oxy' cleaners).
If so it would be useful and safe for cleaning stainless steel - but it's not typically considered to be useful as a sanitizer.

I got the info from Brupaks myself.
It says on the tub..... "Contains sodiumcarbonate Peroxyhydrate" if that's any help?
If I can use this to sanitize the cornys till I can get some StarSan I'll be happy. As I said, I've used it to clean and sanitize my mini kegs without problem for a while.
Cheers Tom

According to Wiki, that's just another name for Sodium Percarbonate, so what I said above still applies (but I'm not a chemist).

I wonder what the sanitizer in it is then?
At least it's ok to use as a cleaner though

(As per the wiki link above) Sodium Percarbonate breaks down to soda ash, hydrogen peroxide, which then breaks down to water. When it's added to water and lots of bubbles form its the 'active oxygen' freed in the chemical reaction that helps with both cleaning and sanitation, peroxide is also a known sanitiser. However while it does have some sanitizing properties, most home brewers consider those properties to be 'weak' compared to dedicated sanitisers like StarSan (there is a thread here somewhere about how much needs to be used to produce home-brew type sanitation levels, and it's significantly more than is often recommended for use).
Don't get me wrong, I think it is one of the best cleaning/soaking products available for home-brewing, I use it on all my stuff (and buy it cheaply in bulk 25kg sacks at ~85p per kg), I just don't think it is a good sanitiser and do not trust it as such.

Even though it's not given me any problems with the mini kegs I think I'll get some starsan for the cornys. I'll have needed to get some once the chemipro had been used up anyway so but I won't take the chance......
