residual smell in FV

Post by barry44 » Wed Oct 31, 2012 9:53 am

Guys,

is it normal for a plastic FV to retain a residual smell of beer after cleaning or should it smell of nothing?

I have the coopers latest FV, with the krausen collar, and i can smell an beery scent from it after cleaning and multiple rinses with both cold and hot water.

I rinsed out the FV following bottling with hot tap water to get rid off as much of the crud as possible. Once this was done i filled the FV up to about 30 litres with hot tap water and then added 3 scoops of Poundland unscented Wizz Oxi cleaner, put the lid on and left it for over 24 hours, basically from the Sunday evening to the Monday evening after work.

I then drained the FV into the sink and took the whole thing up to the bath where i filled it with cold tap water and ran it through the tap until it got below the level of the tap which i swilled around and poured. I done this twice. Whilst doing this i rinsed the lid several times with cold water along with the collar.

I then filled the whole thing up as far as i could with hot tap water and put the collar and lid on and left it in the bath over night. I emptied it out the next morning and left it in the spare room to dry, with the lid on.

When i checked it last night, i noticed the smell when i took the lid off.

I do not use anything to scrub my fv, preferring to let the action of the cleaner take the dirt off naturally.

It is clean internally, there is no evidence of the prior brew at all.

Is this normal or is there something wrong with the process?

Tonight, i am going to put the tap in a bowl of oxi with warm water as the tap has only had a rinse and the presence of the oxi on the closed position.

I sanitise with star san using a spray bottle of made up solution which i spray onto all surfaces that can come in contact with the beer until all surfaces are wet, i do this prior to brewing.

Am i possibly leaving the oxi too long in the plastic? What is the recommended time for this? The reason for 24 hours or so is that i had left PBW in for that period of time previously. I had the smell when using that too.

I look forward to your advice.

Cheers,

Barry

Not sure the smell is an issue, but I finds soak with a bleach solution gets rid of this for me.
