Is washing the bottles in the dishwasher the problem?

Post by paz1 » Mon Mar 18, 2013 1:45 pm

I rinse and wash my bottles in the dishwasher. Once washed, I remove the bottles from the dishwasher, spray some starsan solution into the bottles and cap them. On bottling day, the cap comes off, I rinse the bottle 2 or 3 times with starsan solution on the battle bottle rinser.

My problem is my last few bottled batches don’t taste right  . I can not taste any of the ale flavour  and there is a slight tangy/ weak vinegar taste to it. The non ale drinkers don’t seem to be complaining when they drink it, but I don’t like it.

Is there any posibility that the chemicals ( raise aid, dishwasher salt or the detergent used in the dishwasher) is/are causing my brew to taste crap? What I keg, is not affected, just what is bottled. The brew also smells and tastes as it should out of the fermentor. What ever the problem, it is happening between the fermentor and the bottling. I have changed my tubing, but this hasn't solved the problem. I am planing on bottling the next batch with only hand washed bottles to determine if this is what is causing me the problem, however if someone out there already knows the answer then I can at least I can stop worring about the cause.

I have throughly washed and sanitised all my equipment, but it hasn’t rectified my problem.

Any advise please?

Rinse then in cold water first a few times, could be something like rinse aid.
In future don't use a dishwasher as it's not needed, just rinse after use, spray with Starsan and seal with foil or a plastic cap.
