Used Videne for the first time

Post by Troutman47 » Fri Mar 22, 2013 3:15 pm

I've used Videne for the first time today, I'm hoping it works out ok, this is what I've done.

After I've had a bottle of beer I put a little water in the bottle, shake it to mix up the yeast and then empty it out.
The bottle is then filled to about 3/4's full with water and then vigorously shaken and emptied and this is done twice.
Then left to drain, usually over night then put away into boxes.

So, today i've sanitised with videne using a bottle rinser at the rate of 1.25ml per litre. Filled the bottles, capped and put away in the airing cupboard.

Fingers crossed! [-o<

Videnes fine.

I tend to make up a bucket of Videne a day or two before bottling day, immerse a batch of bottles (around 8) for 10 minutes or so then remove, drain and cover the top with foil.
Repeat the process for all bottles.

Then on bottling day just fill.

Works fine for me.

When I've drank a beer rinse out and dry the bottle, sometimes I put in a little Videne and cover with foil but as long as they are clean and dry they store fine.

troutie, I use the same process as you after finishing a bottle of beer. But I then store the bottles away dry.
When bottling time comes then a good rinse with tap water, drain on a bottle tree and then squirt starsan into the bottle, swill round + drain.
Then fill the bottle.

Thanks guys, I feel a bit more confident about what I've done.

I was thinking that after the bottles are rinsed, drained and stored there never has been any bacterial/fungal growth so was hoping everything will be ok.
I'll know in a few days, usually the beer drops bright after about 3 days in the airing cupboard so I might just sample on Monday or Tuesday and see how it's doing.

Cheers

Yeah, store bottles clean and dry and the top open. If you clean them properly there is nothing for mould or nasties to grow on.
Come bottling day a quick rinse out under the tap will get rid of the dust and dead spiders then sanitise with whatever you prefer.

Yup, that's my take on bottling :)
