mMould on false bottom.
mMould on false bottom.
just cleaning my kit off for a brew tomorrow, and noticed spots of mould on my fb which is a splatter screen. Ive managed to clean most off but canr seem to shift all of it. I will get a new one i imagine, but is there any harm in usingbit for tomorrows brewday?
Re: mMould on false bottom.
steep it in a mild solution of bleach. 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. is it stainless? don't leave it too long if so an hour maybe and rinse thoroughly with boiling hot water.

If you've got most of it off then its unlikely to harm the flavour, and its unlikely that anything from it would survive the boil.
I occasionally have mould problems (or at least the kit does!), with cold metal sitting out in the unheated garage. Things that can work well are boiling or steam cleaning, hot long soaks in pecarbonate-based cleaners (which don't need a short contact time) or dettol mould and mildew remover (comes in a fairly bright green spray-gun type bottle) which is essentially a concentrated bleach and so does have contact times to observe. I'm sure between these and harsher things like caustic soda (drain cleaner) or oven cleaners there must be a way to clean the splatter screen.
Cheers

Yea I tried the mould cleaner I have, it just didnt seem to shift it.
The surface mould came off, its just a very very fine mash, so I have no brush fine enough to get in between and wipe it off.
I may just use it, and if it comes out lookign bad still after the brew, replace it.

Re: mMould on false bottom.
I cannot help with the cleaning but if you replace the FB then I have found the best way to prevent mould is as follows:
Rinse well after use
Spray with a no rinse steriliser before storing (Star San).
I have not had any mould since doing this.

Yea my problem was not letting it dry fully before storing it away. And then not brweing for way too long!
Re: mMould on false bottom.
Might sound daft, but do you have a pressure washer (like a Karcher) ?Cazamodo wrote:Yea I tried the mould cleaner I have, it just didnt seem to shift it.

Nope I don't, I've though about using my steamer to have a go at it though.
