Some labels will come off clean after an overnight soak in plain old cold water.
Other need something like WD40 or a label remover solvent (e.g. "Goo Gone").

A brillo pad works well too.

Paint brush cleaner also works.
Or sometimes a knife will do to just scrape the gunk off, especially if it's been well soaked.

For paper labels I put the bottles into an empty FV, squirt of washing up liquid and then fill to the top with water. leave for a day or so then the labels will slide straight off, and the gunk will go with the wipe of a damp cloth. I have run them through a dishwasher cycle before, and if you remove the bottles straight away, the labels and gunk peel straight off. i wouldnt do too many at a time tho, and make sure that you collect the labels from the filter/bottom of the dishwasher to avoid clogging.
i dont bother with the plastic, or any other type labels anymore, too much hassle, but I have done them before with either wd40 and a scouring pad, or peeling them off with a new stanley blade. Be careful tho!!
