cleaning bottles with no rinse sanitizer
Does anybody clean their bottles with this stuff? I've been following Charlie Papazian's advice and soaking them over night in a mild bleach solution.
Also pipes and tubes. I'm guessing they have to be immersed rather than sprayed.
I've just got hold of some so it's a whole new world for me.
Cheers

EDIT: I think this ought to be in the Cleaning section. Apologies.

I'm not sure you should use starsan to clean bottles. I made this mistake at first. I used to sanitise my bottles in a weak bleach solution and then tripple rinse before bottling. I never had a problem. When I first started using starsan I stopped using bleach completely until after a couple of batches I held a bottle up to the light that I was about to put my precious beer in and I realised that the bottle was filthy. Now i soak all my bottles in bleach to clean and then rinse and store them in crates labelled as cleaned. I use starsan on the day to sanitise.

As small but important point to make - cleaning is not the same as sanitising.DaveyT wrote:Does anybody clean their bottles with this stuff? I've been following Charlie Papazian's advice and soaking them over night in a mild bleach solution.

Cleaning removes physical soiling which would otherwise reduce the effectiveness of sanitisers which will react with organics.
You need a detergent and physical action for cleaning, followed up by a sanitiser.
Starsan is for sanitising cleaned surfaces.
Re: cleaning bottles with no rinse sanitizer
oxy to clean, star-san to sanitize.

Re: cleaning bottles with no rinse sanitizer
My last bottling session was sanitised with starsan, and I'll never go back! I'll just emphasise the sanitise part of that, they are thoroughly cleaned prior to the application of starsan.
Re: cleaning bottles with no rinse sanitizer
Soda Crystals or Oxy for cleaning, then rinse well and use (no-rinse) StarSan for sanitising.
Works a treat.
As others have said, sanitising wont 'clean' the bottle.
