storing star san

Post by HopIt » Sat Feb 24, 2018 8:45 pm

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Can I store Star San long term in a plastic fermentor? I usually store 20 litres of the stuff in glass carboy I just smashed (don't ask...). I presumed putting a highly acidic solution in plastic long term could letch bad stuff but now thinking glass is really not that practial obvs. I don't really care about damaging the fermentor, its more the idea of plastic dissolving into the solution and ending up in me brew that I don't like.

Cheers

Personally i would not store it but thats just me. I find its not difficult to just make up what you need. I cannot see the point in making up a large volume of it to store long term.

i have to agree, a 5l batch when used with a trigger spray bottle is sufficient for a number of brews, and i wouldnt suggest reusing solution that has been applied to sanatise a surface.
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager

I've never had a problem with reusing Star San, and have used the same batch for months and months with no problems at all; I haven't had an infection since the early days. I find it useful having a volume to dump stuff in. Whenever I test the pH it is fine so don't really see point in chucking.

It comes in a plastic bottle.

Personally I would not store a Starsan solution but that is purely my view. Starsan is also more a biostat that biocide.

A weak solution of Starsan will be fine in many plastics. Look on the bottom of the bottle/ drum and you should see a triangle. If it says 2 it will be HDPE which will be fine, and is the polymer used to make the Starsan container. PET (soft drinks bottles) will also be fine for a solution. Many industrial acids and alkalis are now shipped in HDPE Drums and barrels. The only polymer I would not recommend is PVC. This could have potential processing aids that might leach, but nowadays few PVC bottle are made if at all ( I have not seen one for years).

Looks like the fementor has number 5 on the bottom which I assume is OK as not PVC (which I think is number 3).

No 5 in the triangle is PP or polypropylene. Not much to choose between PP or HDPE in this application. The latter might be a little more impact resistant but that is about all. Both would be good on neat Starsan. The only precaution is do not leave the fermenter in strong sunlight. UV light will degrade just about anything with time.
