Old Bleach?

Post by Hogarth » Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:33 pm

Is there an easy test to find out if bleach has decayed? I've just bought a large bottle of it from the market. It was covered in dust, but I assumed that bleach lasted for ever. Apparently not!

Actually -- I should have said -- it was from a little shop in Brixton market and I've no idea what sort of turnover they have. But you're right, I'm probably worrying unnecessarily!

My bottle of Tesco Value bleach has a "DOM" which I guess means Date of Manufacture, and a DOE which I guess is Date Of Expiry, and there is two years between them. I can't find a date on my "proper" Domestos.

I guess that the Date of Expiry might be its half-life rather than an extinction date, so its disinfecting power will be down by half after two years. It cleaning power will be unaffected though.

However, as we don't know how strong it was in the first place it is academic. Bleaches vary greatly in strength from brand to brand. "Value" bleaches are usually less than a third of the strength of premium bleaches.
