Wheeler's Beer Engine
Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine
Hi Graham,
Had to use BKE the other day to bring up my points, but couldn't find it directly on the ingredients list - is this the thing known as malto-dextrin? Or is it something else?

Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine
Unlikely. Malto-dextrin is meant as a beer kit improver, used to replace part of the sugar in a kit and kilo kit, but that is not what Muntons BKE is. Muntons BKE is something like 50/50 sugar and dried malt extract. I am not sure of the exact ratio, perhaps the packaging would give a clue. If not assume a 50/50 ratio and enter the two ingredients separately. Seems an expensive way of upping the gravity though.dedken wrote:Hi Graham,

Entering the ingredients separately was not something I had thought of before! I just had some BKE lying around and I wanted to use it rather than pure sugar because of the malt it contains. What would you suggest as a cheaper way of upping the gravity?

Using less liquor with the same Malt bill

Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine
Is it worth downloading Wheeler's Beer Engine? I bought his book last week and hope to start extract brewing in the next few and wondered if this would help?

BeerEngine is free and very useful.

Unclick the fixed box. Then it'll change from ibus to grams.
Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine
OOI is the old perl/tk version of this available anywhere? It'd be fun to have a hack around with it for those of us who don't use windows primarily
.
Thanks,

Re: Wheeler's Beer Engine
Graham have played about a bit with your engine and found it informative just wonder:
I brew kits with modifications have you considered putting kits data into ingredients list( I realise this is a HUGE amount of work sorry!!)
I tend to only use additional hops as flavour/aroma with a max 15 min boil or dry hopping is there any way of incoporatin g this into engine??
Dont want much do I
Beercalculus kind of does this but crashes all the time probably my server
Cheers
