Does any one know if the temperature of the liquid affects the tilt/density results, in any way OTHER than the temperature affecting the perceived density directly? I was wondering if the ispindel itself is affected by temperature, somehow? Might the container the ispindel is in get larger, due to warming, so floating higher, and creating the illusion of a higher density.

I calibrated mine using test solutions at 20c. I'm now using it live, for the first time, in wort at 60c, just two days after calibrating, and it's reading 10 points too high. The sledge hasn't moved, I've checked.

Aren't they supposed to be used in hot wort?

The answer is 'yes'. Temperature changes DO affect the ispindel itself.

1/ The accelerometer output is affected by temperature. It's this that is used to measure the tilt angle, by measuring acceleration due to gravity.

2/ The plastic container does expand slightly when warmed, creating the illusion of the liquid it's floating in being more dense that it really is. The opposite of a conventional hydrometer.

Both errors are said to be more-or-less linear, and it should be possible to correct for them in the derived formula, somehow. I've seen a couple of suggested correction ideas, but I don't understand them yet.

But without added temperature compensation, the ispindel is only accurate at the temperature you calibrate it at. Most people on here seem to use it to monitor the fermentation process, which would be a fairly narrow temperature band. So for most accurate readings, calibrate your ispindel at a temperature in the middle of the range you'd use for fermentation. Or, if you're only interested in the end of fermentation, the temperature you finish fermentation at.

Hi all. Last batch I made up has all sold. I will get parts ordered for another batch. Usually takes about 4 weeks for em to arrive. Will post up once I have em made up.

Not sure if this has been asked before, i'm thinking about purchasing one of these but before I go ahead can someone tell me if there would be any problem with this device communicating from inside a stainless steel conical fermenter which is inside a fridge I use to hold the fermentation temperature.. My router isn't too far away (next room) and I get good signal strength from it when I'm next to my fermenting fridge but i'm just a bit concerned that if I get one I might be wasting my time and money. Maybe someone in the forum has a similar setup?

You won’t know until you try but i doubt it will be an issue.

And there are cheap ways to extend you’re wireless signal anyhow.

It's not that I have a bad signal from my router, on the contrary its quite good, but the fact that the iSpindle device will be behind a metal fridge door and a stainless steel fermenter and the iSpindles's ability to communicate through those barriers that bothers me.

I know of people using them from within stainless fermenters with no problem. I suppose this might not guarantee that it would work with your exact setup, but at least seems promising.

Yes, the FV isn’t an issue in itself, but nobody can give you any guarantee.

Home plugs are cheap enough.
