J_P's Satan's Winter Warmer

First off thanks for sending me the beer - it is the first Belgian beer I have been sent so I have been looking forward to giving it a go. This fallen angel has just finished making a batch of my house bitter so I have a mighty drooth on me (thirst being the work of evil). So, like Adam succumbed to an apple in the Garden of Eden I succumbed to J_P's Satan's Winter Warmer in the kitchen.

I served it straight from the cupboard so I'm not sure if I was supposed to chill it down a bit. However I don't think the beer suffered any. There was the teasing "hiss" of sin on opening and it poured with a fairly tight head resembling the colour of Lucifers gnarled ancient horns (okay I'll stop now). The head didn't hang around too long but the beer still retained its condition right to the end. It was off pale like an IPA and was crystal clear, the picture doesn't do it any justice (I grabbed the glass straight from the drip tray so is my fault).

The nose was an unmistakable sweet Belgian candy and banana with not too much hop aroma getting through. As it warmed up the banana became more prominent. The fruity aroma came through in the taste which was balanced against the saaz hops delivering a nice bitter cleansing taste after the sweetness of the malt faded. As a side note, I am not a big fan of young saaz, this beer was bottled on the 21st of October so hops have had time to mellow and develop.

This was certainly not a session beer at 6.7% but it was deceptively refreshing for a beer that carrys so much weight. I could see me knocking three of four of these in quick succession and wondering why my legs stopped working.

This tasting other people's beer really is the Devil's Work

Amyl Acetate? What temperature was it fermented at? Strong beers and those fermented warm (say, 23c) are prone to it. Strong AND warm is asking for it. In slight ammounts the banana or pear drops estery fruitness is nice, but if it becomes prominent it can become cloying.

Belgian-type yeasts, like the one J_P used, throw amyl acetate/banana even at moderate temperatures. It's a nice flavour in the Belgian-style ales.

It was certainly the yeast that delivered the flavour. I thought that it was very much to type.

Agreed - I really enjoyed it and don't think i'd want to change it.

I had the pleasure of sampling 3 of Steve Flack's beers today. All were superb and I mean really superb (even at 9am) but the American Amber, well that stood out for me (and I think I can still taste it). Steve, hats off, great set up, great beer and great generosity. :D

I have tonight had the pleasure of SteveD's 'Cardinal's Cock'

Before I get to the beer, I must say how great the label is, I read from Steve's brewday thread that he has an artistic friend who did him the honor of designing this label, it is very good indeed, I'd quite like someone as talented as that to help me out so that I'm not stuck with google images and powerpoint! Well done label designer :D

Now the beer, crystal clear, carbonation lovely, not too gassy as some of my bottles have been, a lovely light brown / red colour.

I picked up a strong celery aroma as soom as I picked the glass up to drink, it put me off at first to be honest but then it was very welcoming from then on :) I found that it had a good but not overpowering malt charachter, a very clean taste and a good long bitter finish. I've not tried a brew (to my knowledge) with brown malt, I found that there was a good sweet taste to balance the bitterness, maybe it's the brown malt?

I'd drink a few more of these If I could! I may well give this brew a try. All of Steve's brews have tasted very 'clean' to me, I think that may be down to his good temperature control through fermentation (maybe?)

Any way - Steve - cheers for the beers! One to go still (in May) I'll get your selection box packaged up soon.

My first addition to this thread - tonight I finally got to try Calum's Oatmeal Stout after letting it recover from its experience of the royal mail:

There was a satisfying hiss as I popped the cap and it poured to give 1cm of light tan head with enough carbonation to give a nice gentle liveliness in the mouth without being fizzy. There were roasty and deep malty hints on the nose which kept the secret of what was to come - a fantastic full mouthfeel with complex, rich, creamy, roasty malt flavours leading to a clean bittersweet finish that lingered just long enough for the next mouthful. This is a really well-crafted beer and an absolute delight to drink: complex without being heavy, rich without being cloying, well-balanced and very moreish.

I doff my cap to you sir, a really great beer and can I have another one please? :D

It's a lager made with just pale malt and mittelfruh hops. I drank the tester bottles and they tasted fine.

Oh well, in for a penny....

I've got J_P's lager and Spearmint Wino's Amber Malt Ale (sorry Spearmint - is that correct?). I'll kick it off in a wee while. 8)
