A friend called me while I had the last brew on the go and SWMBO told him what I was doing so he tried me on the mobile.
The conversation started with him questioning what I was doing. Once I'd confirmed that yes, I was brewing beer his comments were along the lines of
"homebrew ? as in home made beer ? - that sounds like something that me grandad used to do"
I thought about justifying what I was doing but decided that I'll let the beer do the talking next time he's around.

...... and the self dentistry comment brought visions of MAs youtube video collection that I had the misfortune to trawl through the other night

Oh i love a bit of praise. Glad you liked them.
Ive decided i n not overly keen on AG#12, but im slowly drinking it. About 25 - 30 pints left. Thats the las dark ale i will be making for a while.

Tonight I've the pleasure of drinking a bottle of Jim's Best Bitter, I've had these for a good few weeks now and don't know how I've kept me mitts of them

As you can see it's a mid copper colour and crystal clear, without over the top carbonation. There is a slight aroma and it has a good but very smooth bitterness and it's very enjoyable to drink, yeast sediment was quite well compacted which made pouring easy. Lovely pint Jim, thanks.

Cheers, Garth. I'm still supping the draft version of that one - very nice.

I've yet to sample your brew - I thought I'd give it a few weeks to mature as it had only been bottled a week or so when you dropped it off (I have iron will-power! ).

OK, I'm no expert beer taster, but here goes with Garth's 5 Brewer Ale.

Image

Aroma was nice citrus fruit, carbonation light and colour copper with good clarity.

The beer has a full mouthfeel with plenty of malt flavour and a balanced citrussy bitterness.

I like this very much - nice one, Garth. Looking forward to supping the rest. 8)

Leffe Blonde Clone (AG #2) - Ian Magson

I was asked to try this some time ago by Ian, and let him know my thoughts, as he thought there ware issues with it . . . . This is what I thought

I don't think you have a lot to worry about, that was a very nice beer . . . Belgians are not my beer of choice but I certainly enjoyed yours.

Firstly you beer had been sat in the shed in the cold since you brought it over, and the yeast settled out fairly well . .. I dropped it into my kegereezer at -2 for 36 hours, and it certainly went cloudy with a heavy chill haze, but this dispersed on warming up to leave a much clearer beer . . . not sparkling but certainly not hazy. On opening the bottle I had the familiar Phssst! and smoking gun . . . but as the beer was highly carbonated (within style) it started to foam, and this disturbed the yeast sediment slightly (Time would fix that), but I quickly poured the beer into a large wineglass, and was greeted with a very estery aroma . . again within style, the head formed quickly but soon dissipated and the beer had a good rising bead. upon taking a good sniff there was certainly the bubblegum esters present, but nothing like DMS. An initial sip hit me with orange notes, but with the massive carbonation it was difficult to pick anything else out, so I used a syringe to knock the excess CO2 out of solution, and it was here that I detected a faint trace of butrytic acid in the aroma . .. this is certainly a flaw, but subsequent tasting didn't reveal it so I suspect it is below the sensitivity threshold.

The beer was very smooth, very little hop flavour, and low (very low) bitterness, the orange notes were pronounced, and so was the Bubblegum in the aroma (its a yeast characteristic). I did detect a faint peppery spiciness in the after taste which was long lasting. Also the tongue appeared to become 'coated' which helped to prolong the finish.

All in all a good beer and certainly within the style guidelines apart from the colour which was not 'blonde' I would say that the water treatment wasn't too much of a problem. I notice that you said that it tastes bitter, certainly was not my impression, which was of a smooth malty beer. It could be that the excess yeast lead you to think this, I have had similar results drinking beer with a lot of yeast they seem very bitter but once clear the bitterness smooths out.

All in all a beer to be relatively proud of well done.

Bouncing Squirrel - Blonde Ale - Damfoose

Had my first bottle of this on Tuesday, and its a damn nice beer . . suffers a little from chill haze, but a good firm sediment, and carbonated appropriately . . . I suspect the hops but I got a lovely Apricot aroma and flavour, with a nice lingering bitter finish

And the good news is that I have another bottle to enjoy sometime

Did you just put a syringe in the glass and keep pumping it?

No, just draw up a couple of ml of beer in a 5ml syringe and squirt it quickly into the beer . . . Make sure the glass has a lot of headroom when you do this because if it is overcarbed it tends to foam a lot :D
