Hi all,
I dd the BrewUK velveteen Choc stout the other week and today I am going to rack it out of the primary fv. Ive just opened the lid and saw this:
Ive had a taste and it doesn't taste bad.
I brewed this with Wyeast 1318 London Ale 3 yeast and to be honest it was pretty slow. It seemed quick at first but then its stalled at about 1025. I contacted BrewUK and they advised to crank the temperature to 22C and give the fv a swirl to get he yeast back into suspension.
What are your guys thoughts? Does it look ok?
Cheers
Does this look ok???
Re: Does this look ok???
It looks OK to me.
What was the OG and how long has it been going and at what temperature?

Re: Does this look ok???
OG was 1053, down to 1025. Greg at BrewUk said terminal gravity is usually 1020 (though instructions do state 1015 ish).
I started the fermentation @ 20C (21/8/16) and I was that this temperature until Tuesday (30/8/16) evening - which is when I increased the temperature to 22C (which is what Greg advised).
So, it was 20C for about 9 days and 22C for 4 days. Racking tomorrow (day 14).
I usually ferment in tall smaller necked fermenters and so do not usually see the beer surface to this degree. (I rarely use this Fermenter). I saw the yeast sat on top and didn't expect to see anything but beer.

Looks OK to me. I wouldn't swirl it around. You risk introducing oxygen. Did you aerate the wort before pitching? If not make sure you give it a good thrash for a couple minutes next time
Re: Does this look ok???
Yes, I aerated using a aeration pump and stone (plus sterile filter etc etc) for 15 mins.
I took care when swirled to prevent O2 ingress. To be honest when I swirled there was plenty of CO2 produced so thought minimal risk to oxygen pickup - but it was a steady swirl.

Re: Does this look ok???
I have just done this kit with me keg priming it last week. I used US-05 with my FG being 1.022. Did you add the cocoa nibs to the FV and if so did you soak in Vodka or the likes before hand? I think it looks fine as it is mind you.
Re: Does this look ok???
Hi,
Yes I did add the cocoa nibs and soaked in vodka for a few hours before adding to the fermenter. I was worried about making sure they were sterile. Hopefully the few hours vodka risk should have sorted any nasties.
It sounds like your fg is similar to mine. I'm surprised the instructions state such an higher final gravity. A few of us have experienced much higher fg's
