Ferment in a Kilner Drinks Dispenser

Post by privatewiddle » Sat Jan 26, 2019 12:27 am

Hello!

I was wondering if there's any reason I could not use a glass drinks dispenser to ferment in. Apart from the rather high tap and the need to make sure not to seal it?

The spigot looks like its chrome but is actually plastic.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I think you will have a problem with the seal.

It will either seal very effectively or leave too much of a gap.

It’s common enough to leave a fermenter slightly open during main fermentation and seal it with an airlock once you are close to fully attenuated, and you have no such option here

If the small volume suits your requirements, it will be fine. Remove the orange seal.

I bought airlocks when I started brewing but if I use them these days, it's only because I like the sound. As soon as the yeast start working there is a positive pressure from the gas in a covered fermenter, difficult for anything to drift in that the relatively massive amount of yeast can't out-compete. A while after, the beer is even better protected by krausen. When that dies down the alcohol kills off lots of stuff.

Wilko's equivalent £6 though I ferment a lot in one of their 80 ltr plastic storage containers. They're selling a 14 ltr for £2 at the moment (check the food safe symbol).
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Chrome plated tap isn’t the best material for fermenting on..
