alkalinity

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

alkalinity

I am trying to work out a value for alkalinity by deduction. If I start with my total sulphates, deduct mag sulphate I then arrive at a figure for calcium sulphate. If I then deduct the calcium sulphate from the total calcium the resultant figure should be calcium carbonate. I think. This only works if I assume that the magnesium, for which I have a value, is all mag sulphate. Is this a reasonable assumption?

Can anyone tell me if my powers of deduction are sound?!!
