Using campden tablets to remove chlorine?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Using campden tablets to remove chlorine?

Post by johnmac » Tue Aug 14, 2007 12:03 pm

Will it work OK if the campden tablet is put into hot water, or does it have to be cold?

I'm going to put my chemists guessing hat on and say that it probably will work in hot water as the neutralisation of aqueous bisulfite is a very fast reaction.

Preparing a cup of tea (black, green, caffeinated, decaffeinated, herbal) also removes
chloramine,
Fill your HLT, have a quick cuppa and its gone

Thanks chaps...I think!

Steve, as a PhD/boffin, are you supposed to do guessing?

Should I put the question to Brainiac? :=P

Loving this thread.

So if I have a cup of tea here at work will that sort my home water supply or do I need to be at home when I drink my tea?

*adds a Sanatogen tablet to the teapot*

Having kept tropical fish in a past life - chlorine/chloramine kills fish. Generally you add a chlorine/chloramine remover from water befor adding it to a live tank. The additive is generally a phenolphthalein derivative. Works for fish but not people I believe.

Reverse osmosis is the way to go fo people with large fish tanks. Would work for beer too I would guess.

I'd hazard a guess that the reaction would occur quicker with heated water (almost all do), but if in doubt remember to brew a cup of tea and rapidly dispose of any ornamental fish about the the house to be on the safe side as per DaaBs instructions

As Daab pointed out chloramine is bad for fish and fish owners (that brew beer)... The only way I see that being bad is if you drink tap water whilst suffering with kidney problems, oh and pissing into your fish tank

I keep Tropical fish (not yet got any marine fish) and use a purchased product that makes tap water safe for the fishes by removing the Chlorine and Chloramine instantly, the ingredients are not listed on the container (aloe vera is :?) and the directions say to add it to your tank BEFORE adding tour tap water.

If Camden tablets will do the same job then I might be interested to hear from someone who has used them on their fish tanks

As per beer, add the liquid to your bucket before filling with water . . . and then fill your fish tank.

Campden tablets . . . Crush and add to bucket , remove all fish from house, fill bucket with water (hot or cold), make a cup of tea, use water . . . bring fish back into house

Worth finding out if there are any chloramine in your water first. Not all water companies use it. I know United Utilities dont use any anywhere. If you only have Chlorine, boiling will remove it.

If you forget to remove the fish first then I can recommend a fantastic Chablis to go with poached guppies and watercress sauce.
