CRS dosage question

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

CRS dosage question

Post by SiHoltye » Sat Nov 01, 2008 12:26 am

Hello,

Am brewing tomorrow, and I'm not sure I'm using Graham's water calc right. The alkalinity info I have is this:

2008 to date Min Ave Max No.of test

Calcium 51.5 52.7 54.6 3

Magnesium 5.4 5.4 5.5 3

Total Alkalinity 52 82 117 121

(Please note, we measure alkalinity in mg/l HCO3, but multiplying the values by 1.6 converts them to CaCO3)

Sorry about the formatting. So I've input the 'ave' using the HCO3 selected and then the CaCO3 (HCO3 multiplied by 1.6) selected and it changes everything. What have I done wrong?

I think (at least I bloody hope), that your water co has given you duff information there, as unlikely as that may seem. I hope that to convert from HCO3 to CaCO3 you divide by 1.219. For emergency confirmation, as you are in a hurry, the Brupaks web site BRUPAKS says much the same; which is probably sourced from murphys, not me.

I have been trying to work out where that figure of 1.6 came from, and it appears to be (close to) the figure to convert carbonate into calcium carbonate, so I think your correspondent slipped up. Phew! [-o<

Super superb. Thanks so much for your response GW. For the brew tomorrow I'll work off your info, the maths works in your calc, thanks Graham. A bottle has your name on it :)

Thanks, I'll drink a pint in your name tomorrow night.

You had me worried to death for a while. I dread to think how many people i'd have misled if you'd found such an elementary bug in the calculator. I'll sleep better now.
