My local water report did not include Magnesium or Bicarbonate so I emailed Anglian Water and asked them.
Credit to them, they replied immediately and said they would provide an answer in about 7 days. And, lo, about a week later I got the reply.
The magnesium was quoted just fine but, instead of the biCarbonate (HCO3) that I asked for, they quoted:
Alkalinity 152 mg/l
ProMash has an option to calculate Alkalinity as CaCO3. If I stuff 152 into that calculator it says HCO3 is 182mg/l
Does that sound correct? Have I done anything daft?
biCarbonate and Alkalinity
Re: biCarbonate and Alkalinity
That kinda works out:
182 / 1.22 = 149
Which is pretty close to the 152 quoted.
I also checked the HCO3 levels for other areas and 182 seems to be fairly reasonable. A bit higher than Yorkshire and Burton but lower than Edinburgh and Dublin.
In the absence of any other numbers I think I will use that...

Re: biCarbonate and Alkalinity
Well, in a world where we moan about big companies and bitch about corporate fat cats I am pleased to offer the glimmer of light that is Anglian Water customer service. I've just had another reply from a different Customer Service Scientist (great job title!).
She explained that they measure alkalinity as CaCO3 but that the 152 ppm originally quoted to me had already been converted and so it was the HCO3 figure that I had requested. She also was at pains to point out that this is just an average value and she attached a spreadsheet containing the last 2 year's worth of readings so I can see the typical variation!
Hats off to great customer service!
