Adding campden tablets

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Adding campden tablets

Post by adodman » Wed Mar 04, 2009 4:34 pm

I have read on this forum that adding half a campden tablet to tap water is beneficial for chloramine removal. I have been told that this is what gives that 'home brew taste' that I have been trying to get rid of. The last couple of kit beers I have done I have used bottled water and the taste has definitely improved.

How long does the campden have to be added before the water can be used. I am in the process of getting together my all grain kit and was thinking of filling my HLT with water from the hot water tap to save electric on heating up the water to strike temp. I have a combi boiler so thought it would be ok to use or is this just me being stupid?

I think they work almost instantly, certainly not more than a couple of minutes.

And is it ok to use water from the hot tap when a combi boiler is used to heat the water? :?:
