Another bottled water question.. sorry

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Another bottled water question.. sorry

Post by joel_m » Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:43 pm

I'm about to start a brew and figured bottled water was the way to go as my water smells quite chlorinated (thames Valley).

So I bought 10lt of tescos ashbeck as that was all they had left and 9lt of co-op fairbourne natural mineral water (next supermarket on my way home from work).

The Tesco stuff is 10mg/lt Calcium and the Co-op is 55mg/lt Ca so when mixed they should be about 31mg/lt total calcium (completely by chance).
I read somehwere that 30mg/lt Calcium carbonate is the target for a pale ale is the CaCo3 Figure the same as the quoted Ca level?

I'm probably massively over simplifying this I guess... Will this blend of waters create an ok liquor to brew with?

I don't have any gypsum but I do have 9lt of evian in the cupboard this has a Ca level of 80. So that plus the co-op water made up with 2lt of the tescos water pushes the Ca level to 62ppm would this be ok? Beaing in mind the rest will be made up tp 23lt with tap water and this is a hard water area.

Sorry I'm probably taking what seems a very complex sience and trying to make it too simple! :?

The bicarbonate levels of each of them are:

360mg/lt Evian pH at source 7.2
193mg/lt co-op water pH 7.85
13mg/lt Tescos pH 6.5

Unfortunately there is no information quoted for Carbonate levels.

My local tap water is:
309.3mg/lt (ppm) CaCO3
Chlorine 250mg/lt
I can't find any information about Bicarbonates for the tap water. It is classified as a "hard water area".
I'm guessing from what you have said that the bottled water will be a better liqour than an all tap water brew?

Sorry for all the questions!
