Cloudy liquor

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Cloudy liquor

Post by Jymbo » Sun Apr 12, 2009 3:03 pm

I decided to use Graham's calculator for my next brew which I hope to do on Tuesday. To speed things up I decided to boil the water and add the Gypsum and Calcium Chloride today. I boiled the water first, then added the salts (appx 6g of each) and continued to boil for ten minutes. It's cooling at the minute but the water does seem a bit cloudy.

Just wanted to check if this is normal?

Gypsum and calcium choride can take quite a bit of stirring to get into solution properly. I start off with a small amount of water in a blender with the salts, then add that to the bulk of the liquor.

I thought a vigorous boil would have done the trick - maybe if I bring it back to the boil and let it boil a bit longer - either way should I expect the liqour to finish up completely clear?

Cheers, Jim. Got the boiler back on. Had to cut it short earlier - Easter lunch at the inlaws - well fed (and watered) now and ready for round two :D

Gave it another half hour and allowed it to cool overnight and it's crystal clear this morning. Thanks for the advice, Jim.

BTW, hats off to Graham's water calculator - that's the first time I've used it and my brewhouse efficiency went up from 70% to 75% for a 19L brew.
