Bentonite to clear beer

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Bentonite to clear beer

Post by floydmeddler » Wed Jul 01, 2009 9:57 pm

I hydrated a teaspoon of Bentonite 3 days ago and stirred it into my secondary fermenter. The results so far show an extremely clear beer. Is there any reason why this stuff isn't popular? I, so far, am pretty impressed with the stuff myself.

Don't know, but I have some of this stuff (bentonite), and I have just brewed a pale ale, so I am very interested in the answer too!

Cheers,
Craig

So... 2 weeks in the bottle and I've poured an extremely crystal clear bright pint. Was completely amazed and thought, wonder what it will be like in 2 more weeks! My excitement was short lived however as I watched the head vanish before my eyes never to return. I'd heard that this could cause a problem and fear that it really has. :( However, it is early days and in 2 weeks it may be a different story. Not too hopeful though!

So, I've cracked open another one. Head retention is fine and clarity is really good. However, I've just cracked open another brew that I bottled last week (without adding bentonite) and the clarity there is much better. The reason has to be because I finally took the plunge and treated my water with CRS, Gypsum etc AND made myself a cracking hop strainer AND recirculated the wort before adding it to the FV.

This has given me the best results so bentonite is out the window!

Okay - it sounds like I'll go the same route as you. I'm in the middle of building up some proper AG equipment (in fact I've just bought two of the 30l buckets like you have), I've done a couple of brew in a bag style AG brews, but I think I'd be better off with the normal kit that other people use. It doesn't cost much to put together if you do it gradually.

Thanks for posting your results.

It is very cheap to set up. If you want an extremely cheap hop filter, you could do what I did and buy this:

Simply roll it up: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21619

Works a treat! :D
