CRS & DLS for the extract brewer

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

CRS & DLS for the extract brewer

Gentlemen,

I've been giving water treatment some thought for sometime now and wanted to incorporate my reading into my next brew. Essentially this had led me to the Brupaks site & using 1 campden tablet (I brew 25 Ltrs), and appropriate amounts of CRS & DLS. According to my supplier my water has a CaCO3 of 165.1, and that Calcium can be approximated by multiplying this figure by 0.4. So, if I wanted a CaCO3 figures of, say, 50 I'd need to add 0.61 ml of CRS per Ltr, or 0.61 x 25 = 15.25 ml of CRS. This is added to the liquor at the outset. Extract brewers are advised to add the DLS to the boil rather than split between the 'mash' (which we aren't strictly doing), and the boil. Now, I am in the position of only having a 3 gal pot, so boil using that and top up with additional water to the required brew lenght. So, will the DLS still work in this situation or would I be better off doing something different?

Righto, cheers bud. I'll stick to the Campden tablets and let the water treatment wait till I have the kit to go AG.
