Hi,
Brupak's website state that all brewing liquor be treated and not just that for mashing.
I use around 40L of water altogether when doing a 25L batch of beer. Do I treat all this water or should evaporation be accounted for somewhere?
Sorry if this is a silly question but water treatment confuses me!
Cheers

Well, rightly or wrongly, I always treat all my water, usually around 40 L, like you.
If I have to add more to adjust OG, I also add CRS to that as well. As I've always done it, I have no idea what it would be like if I didn't!

Brupaks (Following Murphys instructions) Are Correct . . . . All brewing liquor should be treated to adjust alkalinity. . . . . You may only need to treat your mash liquor to adjust calcium levels though

Re: How much water to treat with CRS?
May or may not be correct - but I always "Burtonise" all my water by adding salts to the HLT after 1) SO2 2) CRS and then make sure the water is hot before stirring well to dissolve.
That said, I believe it is best to add salts to the dry Grist before mashing? I must try this and see if it alters pH and efficiency.

Thanks all. any ideas on evaporation though? Does anything need to be accounted for there?

Re: How much water to treat with CRS?
I wouldn't worry about evaporation, as long as you have enough wort at the end to ferment! Yes the lost steam will mostly be pure H20, but if you have a lid were only talking about a small amount. Adding water will only reduce the OG (ie your watering it down!).
Re: How much water to treat with CRS?
I also treat all mine in the HLT. 50L a go....
This gives me plenty for the brew, plus 10-14 litres for my sanitising and washing as well.....it's wasteful of CRS and salts, but it's easier to just heat up one vessel of water.
