Help With Water Report

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Help With Water Report

Post by chazzb » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:28 pm

Hi,

I have my local water report here: http://www.bang.co.uk/emmer-green.pdf

I would appreciate your (collective) expert advice on how best to treat my water for IPA style beers and better mash efficiency.

Many thanks,

Charles.

Ideally the water report will show ppm values for calcium and magnesium, but yours doesn't (neither does my Severn Trent report). These are the key values you need to know if you want to monkey with your water.

Having said that, I'd suggest a couple of things. First, if your beers generally taste good, leave your water alone. Secondly, if you think that tweaking your water will make a difference to your brewhouse efficiency, it won't. It might if you are Budweiser making a trillion gallons per batch, but I doubt that's you!

If you find that the hoppiness isn't there in beers in which you hoped it would, try a teaspoon or two of gypsum.
