Where to start

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Where to start

Post by smeggedup » Wed Jun 29, 2011 3:41 pm

Hi

Been brewing awhile with kits and just started in all grain.

I was wondering how you start or the best place with water treatment having never done any as yet.
Do I need to get my water company to test the water and go off their result or is their a set of tests I can use ?

Cheers

Start here

Also if you put your location in your profile there maybe someone very nearby you who has the same water, where I live our water is fairly constant and all the people living near me tend to have a very similar water treatment regime.

You can also send a sample of your water to Murphys Home Brew here and they will test it all for you.

If you are moving to all grain, don't worry about water until you have a few brews under your belt. And even then don't worry too much unless you have quality issues that you can definately put down to the water. It is a good idea to put an approximate location in your profile, or in your post, because it may make the difference between someone answering your question or not. Someone living in a soft water area is likely to have more problems with beer clarity than someone in a hard water area, for example.

Water treatment will usually come later in your apprenticeship.

Ok guys it's clearer
I'm in Doncaster is there anyone out there doing water treatment

Urm not sure about any quality issues
Sat down to my first all grain brew and it doesn't taste quite expected
But I can't but my finger on what it is, I could almost say it's chemically taste which is alkaline isn't ? , it's lacking the fizz that it should
80gs of sugar to 19litres so it should be quite fizzy
It's been in warm (room temp) for 18days with the last threes days in the fridge.

But could the fizz be due to the temp ? If so how can I increase the fizz
Or water quality issue ?

I have wasted so much grain mainly due to wrong or no water treatment, throwing gallons of beer away when I have worked hard to get things right. Since my water analysis at Murphyandson my beer has been good. They don't just test the water they tell you what to add to make your brewing liquor correct for the type of beer you want.
Good brewing and good luck :D

I agree, the Murphys analysis is worth it. Stil, you must check your water with an alkalinity test kit before each brew day to make sure your water has not changed as i believe some water companys have a habit of mixing water sources. I have been lucky as my water is always very consistent.
