I live in an extremely hardwater area.
The figures I have from the Southern Water web site are as follows:
CaC03 = 311
Camg/l = 124.4
Clark 21.77
French 31.10
German 17.42
The salifert kit gives me a reading of 268 CaC03 so there must have been a lot of rain recently or something.
Using the calculator on this site jims do I need to contact Southern Water for a full report to use the calculator? As I don’t have a lot of the readings it is asking for.
BTW I normally only use CRS to reduce carbonate to achieve the level of brew required is this enough?

If you have your alkilinity reading go to Brupacks site if you have a alk of 311 to bring your alk down to say 35 for bitter you need to add 35 ml of CRS for 23 litres of liquor thats 1.5 ml per litre. If you look at the brupacks chart for DLS ( salts to add to the mash tun and boil ) you should work it out for DLS additions . It's late if you have a problem with the DLS e-mail me.

Well my calculations are based on liquor volumes form Alemans Batch Sparge calculator
30.6 Litres of wort is required for the boil
Collect two equal volumes of 15.3 Litres of wort from the mash tun
A total volume of 21.3 Litres of liquor is required for the first batch
Comprising of 10 Litres used in the mash
and 11.3 Litres to top up with
15.3 Litres of liquor is used for the second batch
A mash tun of AT LEAST 25.5 Litres will be required
The total qty of water required is 36.6 Litres, handy for water treatment
I am brewing a pale ale and the total alkalinity of the water (taken from the web site is) as CaC03 is 311 p.p.m. In order to bring it within the target range of 30-50 p.p.m. (for pale ale) I will need to reduce the alkalinity by 261- 281 p.p.m. From the following table I have calculated that the amount of CRS to be added is approx 1.5 per litre so if using 36.6 litres its 36.6 x 1.5 = 54.9ML (the 1.5 agrees with your figure)

For the calcium content. I have used Original alkalinity in ppm = 311 x 0.4 = Calcium in ppm = 124.4ppm
A typical Pale Ale requires a calcium content of 180-220 p.p.m. As I already have 124.4 p.p.m. I will need an extra 55.6 to 95.6 p.p.m. From the table below I have calculated the amount of DLS required is 0.40 of DLS per litre, so if was using 30ltrs x 0.4 = 12 grams

When making a full mash brew, DLS should be added in two stages:
Stage 1. Weigh sufficient DLS to treat your mashing liquor ***** What is the calculation ***** added to the grain
Stage 2. Weigh sufficient DLS to treat the balance of the total brewing liquor ***** What is the calculation *****
Also I am sure i read on here somewhere about CRS adding Chloine to the liquor should I use anything to over come this?
