just tested my water

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

just tested my water

Post by paulg » Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:54 am

I have just tested my tap water using salifert kit
I am a little unsure of the procedure
is the reading at the point were you first see the pink colour even though it goes imediately or when the solution stays permanently pink?
I first saw the pink colour when the meq was 3.3 but it faded straight away I continued to add drops until the solution stayed pink this was meq 4.22
I believe I need to multiply the meq x 50 to get the carbonate reading is this correct?

When it stays pink. Then x50 like you say.
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.

Sounds like you have quite high alkalinity = 211 = 4.22 * 50

You may need to look into CRS treatment if you want to do pale ales.

Just tested mine too! After the awful tasting Hop Back Summer Lightning I made it is time to do water treatment tomorrow.

First practice run gave a reading between 0.15 and 0.16 gave meq of about 4.7 (*50)=alkalinity of 235 (it is a hard water area I live in).

I will be doing Mysterio SNPA and Hop Back Summer Lightning tomorrow, so with BIAB of about 32l that gives 36.5ml CRS, 9.64g Gypsum and 6.49g Epsom Salts.

Hopefully no astringent beer for me tomorrow!
