Lab water reports

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Lab water reports

Post by FatGaz » Mon May 14, 2012 5:40 pm

I've emailed Severn Trent twice over the last six weeks, asking for a water report for my local area, but they are useless and I have had no reply. So I am thinking of getting a report done through Murphys Labs. The question is: how long would the report be valid for? Does my water change much over a few months? Would a yearly report be ok, or could I go longer?

The report is valid for the sample you send them, There is nothing to say that your water company cannot change the source they draw the water from day to day, which will affect your water quality.

It depends on your location really. Some supplies are very consistent, others can vary wildly as the water company switches from reservoir to borehole or similar. I have no idea about the Nottingham area but brewers local to you should be able to give you some idea.

Incidentally, we are also served by Severn Trent and you can download the water reports directly from their website(http://www.stwater.co.uk/category/536). It does not include the all important total alkalinity but I got that from them by email within a week or so. I also had our water tested by Murphys and the result were pretty close to the ST numbers. I've done the Salifert test a few times since then and my water seems fairly stable. That's not to say that it won't change tomorrow though.

get a salifert test kit. try phoning and asking to be put through to the lab when you get through to the water board. they helped me so much with mine. they even phoned back to ask everything was going ok after. they didnt give me alkalinity though. lie and tell them your setting up a brewery lol

I am supplied by severn trent, I mashed on Monday morning alkalinity 104ppm, I have just filled up my HLT for another mash on Thursday morning and the alkalinity reads 75ppm. And I am sure it is correct as I did two tests just to make sure. So things can change on a daily basis.
Good Luck

The water report for my post code gives a CaCO3 of 223ppm! No wonder water out the tap tastes like cheap paracetamol.
