A few questions Please. have done a few all grain beers and have turned ok good I suppose but time to get real with my water. Currently needing total waters of around 50L and using tap water filtered through a brita type filter jug is a bit of a joke. My tap water tastes pretty chlorine and not nice hence me filtering at home.
I brew in my garage about 20 feet away and looking for some suggestions on how to get 50L into my hlt filtered from my tap .....interested to hear how you guys do it....
Im just reading into alkalinity of water today and have a ph pen here and tested my tap water at 7.11..not sure exactly what this means before grains are added but ill keep reading ON....I live in Ireland if that's any relevance
Sorting out the H20
Re: Sorting out the H20
I use a filter from Screwfix http://www.screwfix.com/p/high-capacity ... t-10/16747. The mains pressure is enough to push water through my filter into my HLT which is a similar distance as yours. I connect up with CK 3/4 inch hozelock brass clunk-click fittings. The hose I use is silicon hose from The Malt Miller to ensure no contamination from the standard garden hose type, which may have lead in the plastic. I use the same hose set up to move wort and a 14 watt solar project pump from here: http://shop.solarproject.co.uk. This pumps the wort from the boiler once cooled into my primary fermenter, again some 20 feet away. By the way, you should check if you have chloramines in addition to, or instead of chlorine, in your water. Normal carbon filters will not remove chloramines and you will need to dose the water with potassium or sodium metabisulphite to remove the chloramine (these metabisulphites also remove the chlorine, so you may not need to filter your water anyway, unless it has other volatile chemicals or silt in it.)
