Lager water treatment

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Post by youaintseenmeright » Sun Oct 28, 2012 5:37 pm

I am looking to brew a larger next week i have extremely soft water Caco3 is 16 and my co3 is 9.6 when I punch my details into the water calculator it suggests about 2 grams of both gypsum and calcium chloride I have run out of the dry liquor salts that I normally use will there be any noticeable effect from not adding the additions this is my first go at larger normally when I brew pale ales I add about 25 g of salts so I am struggling to believe a 4 g addition will make much difference if I am wrong please let me know!!!!

I doubt it will make any difference, sounds like you have pretty good water for brewing, just a few simple tweaks required.

My water is simalar and suggests adding nothing other than a small ammount of crs for a lager.

Happy brewing :D

Even with such small additions - most likely - they will be adjusting your water so that it has the minimum suggested levels of the various elements.
Mash, boil and fermentation processes all rely on levels of specific elements and unless they are supplied things can turn out less than satisfactory - so if you have them I'd add them because they might well make a difference.
