big cock-up with added auxiliary finings

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

big cock-up with added auxiliary finings

Post by molehill » Fri Nov 30, 2012 7:20 pm

I transfered my first brew to the secondary fermenter today and made a hughmungus mistake!

Yeast added was a Nottingham dry yeast and even though I am aware that adding finings is not usually needed, but as a complete newbie, I considered the brew looked a little cloudy, so decided to add Murphys auxiliary fingings which recommends between 1.5 and 3.75 mls per ltr. Unfortunately instead of adding the lower recommendation of 30mls per 20lt I added 100mls into 23lts!

Have I destroyed what appeared to be a first good attempt...... It certainly tasted drinkable for a green beer! Or is there still hope?

It will be fine, just add about 50ml of isinglass (if you haven't already done so) and wait for it to settle.

I appreciate the posiive advice.... I read that the two shouldn't be added to close together since they tend to stick to each other rather than settle things as intended. So I planned to add some islinglass in the morning?

I add mine about 5 mins apart which seems to be plenty of time for the aux fining to latch onto the protiens. I'm pretty sure the only way to bugger it up is by adding them both at the same time.

Itll be fine (pardon the pun) its just over fined.
You might want to gently stir the whole thing up once it has settled, bear with me, this will break the bonds between the flocs and allow it to settle a bit finer second time round.

That is an interesting statement....... I was going to bottle today and thinking of using carbonation drops rather than stirring in some sugar solution bcause I thought it best not to disturb the settling out [-X .... Now I don't know what to do for the best #-o

Dont you have a bottling bucket you can rack into?

I do.... I racked it into the bottling bucket on Friday and that when I over applied the auxiliary finings. I planned to add a carbonizing drop to each bottle because I was concerned about disturbing the settling of the finings if I added a sugar solution. I hadn't bottled yet because I thought a finished gravity of 1010 was a little too high and didn't want to risk bottles exploding..... Please note this is my first ever brew ..... FULL STOP! I have so much to learn and appreciate all the help I get on this site!

The only other drink I have created is sloe gin Been making it for 20+ years and, which has won 1st prize in my local show. A thimble full will send my wife to sleep in 5 minutes flat  .... so is worth its wait in gold!
