Thanks Kai, an excellent experiment and description which I'm pleased to have had the opportunity to read. I was especially impressed by the extent and methods used to examine, determine and further, photographically replicate colour in that document. My eyes struggle to differentiate colour, especially in the range for pH values of 5.3 to 5.5 on such strips and it was valuable to read values that weren't obtained like my own, a compromise opinion of my wife and myself.
I've exclusively used pH strips for many years with satisfaction, a type made by BDH of the UK that seem very similar to ColorpHast strips.
Your conclusion was interesting and gratifying. I hope there will be contribution by others as my target pH (using my tap water untreated would be 6) has always been lower than the 5.5 stated and my last 7 initial mash pH readings were all between 5.0 and 5.3. Also usually my mash ratio is between 2 and 2.5 l/kg with pale and/or darker malts compared to 4l/kg with pilsner. All in all an excellent piece.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.
