Water Treatment in the Linton Area of Cambridge Water

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water Treatment in the Linton Area of Cambridge Water

Post by k1100t » Fri Mar 08, 2013 3:33 pm

Hello,

My first two all grain brews were tainted with chloramine, as I did no water treatment at all. Not wanting to waste any more time or ingredients, I need get my finger out and learn what I need to do to my water to make it useful for brewing. I don't suppose anyone on here is based in the same Linton area of Cambridge Water and has already contacted them for all the values necessary...?

They used to have a PDF on their website for each of the areas they supplied, but for the life of me I can't find it, there is a water hardness report, but I'm assuming that I need more information than that? Can anyone tell me what else I need, or are the values in that report enough?

I was going to buy some campden tablets and pre boil my mash liquor the night before to get rid of the chlorine and try and precipitate out some of the hardness, is this strictly necessary if I do proper water treatment with one of the online calculators?

Thanks,

Bob.

Unfortunately, that water report is nearly useless and incomplete for brewing use. You will likely have to send a sample to a lab for testing. That will be the first step in assessing what your water adjustments should be.

If you are using Campden tabs, then you don't need to pre-boil the water. However, if the water has a lot of temporary hardness (aka: alkalinity), then it could be a helpful improvement to the water. I invite you to visit the Water Knowledge page of the Bru'n Water website to learn more about water quality and treatment. The link is in my signature.
