Hanna Alkalinity Meter

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Hanna Alkalinity Meter

Post by barneey » Thu Aug 15, 2013 8:06 pm

I had a few spare voucher things for Amazon so thought I might as well get a new toy to play around with and to compliment the other Hanna kit I have.

Anyway it would appear my alkalinity has gone up recently.

I used the Hanna meter as the instructions and it gave me a reading of 260  I was expecting a reading of around the 220 mark.

Anyway I got the tried and test Salifert kit out to double check what was going on, this is now giving me a reading of 270

So can only assume my water has changed slightly in the last month or so?

I was on the Yorkshire water site today and they were saying that they were having to increase their use of river water at the moment because of the recent weather and that would increase the Bicarbonate levels. Probably the same in several parts of the country.

Looks a handy gadget that. How many of the reagent pack things does it come with ?

My water (SW Surrey) comes from aquifers so not sure how much that varies over time, as a layman I would expect it to remain fairly constant as it's not augmented with other sources e.g. river water as above.

It comes with a bottle of 30ml so in theory 30 tests BUT the refills are REALLY expensive at £20 + a bottle.

Its is easier to use than a salifert kit, with the Hanna its 10ml of tap water, stick it in the machine, wait, take it back out add the reagent, stick it back in the machine and the reading is displayed. The trouble I normally have with salifert tests is that I`m normally nearly empty the syringe before anything happens / the display could be clearer on the scale to read. But then again the salifert test is a hell of a lot cheaper and as the results as quite similar bang for buck the salifert wins, for ease of use the Hanna.

BTW they do make both a fresh and salt water edition.

One thing I have noticed with the Hanna Meter is that the supplied syringe isn't very good, the fit between the rubber tip and the plastic body isn't a close one and therefore leaks - pulling up liquid can be difficult. So if you still have you Salifert syringe I would use that. It would also be worth getting a 10ml syringe to measure the water each time rather than relying on the level marked on the test bottle.

Apart from those couple of things, very easy to use. As for testing it against a "lab" report I can`t comment as my last "lab" test was sometime ago, but bear in mind that "lab" results can vary I had two carried out a couple of years ago both using the same days tap water (seconds apart) and both were very different (both were rechecked and both swore blind they were correct - I now know which one was at fault) + the lab results are only a snap shot in time. At least with alkalinity you can test it at home easily.

Note Hanna also do a complete water test kit, but expect to get quite a bit of folding stuff out to buy one.
Cheers
