Water Analysis Guru :)

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water Analysis Guru :)

Post by Pinto » Tue Mar 31, 2015 8:26 pm

Just like to take this opportunity to send my thanks to WallyBrew (Neil) on the sparkling service I received from him in getting my water tested - from posting my sample to getting the report was just 4 days - and at a very reasonable price :D

I HIGHLY reccomend that anyone wishing to take the next step into liquor treatment speak to WB at the first opertunity.

On a personal note - very pleased to find that my water will be very adaptable - it seems to "float" (excuse the pun) between the figures i've found for classical "Pilsen" and "London" profiles so pretty much the world (and there brews) are my oyster :D

Happy Brewer !

Pilsen and London are at opposite ends of the spectrum so is it somewhere inbetween?

Another thumbs up for wallybrew here.

My water is moderately hard (260ppm CaCO3), but low in most of the other ions meaning that after some treatment with CRS it's fairly easy to add salts to build a water profile for hoppy or malty ales, stouts and porters.

Lagers might be trickier though - if I'm going to brew those I'm going to need to either pre boil my water or find a local supplier of reverse osmosis water.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

The values I had gave London at the lower end of things unlike "rock dust from a tap" water from the Midlands  seems I have some dodgy info from t'interwebby then.

Yeah, got mine back too, excellent value for money - here's mine:

Think I might benefit from some calcium additions.

That water is very similar to the nice water I had before moving Grumpy (Very low alkalinity). Get your shovel out for the gypsum

+1 to the OP

Got mine done too and it was all hassle free and good VFM.

I just need to get my head around what I need to do next.

Cheers

Yeah, I haven't done any calcs, but I'm hoping adding gypsum to bring the calcium levels up will also drop the pH to 4.7 or so, which I believe is "ideal" (I'm very new to this water lark though!)

pH 4.7 for mash pH? That's very low. Ideal is generally considered around 5.2-5.5. Some people say slightly higher is fine.

These were my results -

To date I've had better results with darker ales, but would like to produce some hoppy pales and subtle blondes for SWMBO.

Cheers
