Alkalinity, Testing Your Tap Water

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

When are we paying for these, or have I missed something?

I've only just used the kit for the first time but it came up with a alkalinity figure of 116 which is exactly the same value I calculated using a spreadsheet given to me by one of your resident chemists. Spotty on!!!
Just 2 questions
I don't have any digital scales. I use some ancient sweet scales which weigh down to 2 drams(1/8 th of an ounce) I did the test at a friend's house. Will the test solution keep or do you need to make up a new batch each time?
Since so little of the test solution is used if you were short of a full litre of deironised water any time would the test work by say halfing the water and the CRS?

Yes

Yes but it would possibly be less accurate especially if you don't have decent scales.

Thanks Steve
I wasn't thinking of using my scales.I didn't want to buy a set of digital scales just for measuring alkalinity as mine are plenty accurate for measuring hops and other small quantities. I just thought it would be convenient to make a batch up at my mates and keep it at home for future use.The second question about halfing was unrelated to the first andwas put so I could understand the basis of the test.

Quite a heated debate here... DaaB did you manage to get enough orders together to make it worth while making up the kits. I'm interested in one if they are available.

You're a little late, matey. Daab has left the building. The kits were available, but got snapped up.

Hi there Dave

Our water has an alkalinity of around 24ppm (mg/l) .. . its proven to be quite stable over the last three/four months that I have tested it. Certainly not worth worrying about . . .unless you have to increase it when brewing Milds Stouts and Porters

Just to let everyone know, There is a far better test kit on the market that can be used to work out your waters alkalinity. It is unbelievably accurate and it will perform approx 200 tests for approx 8 pounds.

Having worked in a chemistry lab for over 5 years now, I can vouch for this kit

The kit is a salifert alkalinity/carbonate hardness test kit and is available either online or at your local aquarium/fish stockits. The kits are used for test the alk of fish tanks but as said before, these are really accurate and real easy to use and cost approx 4pence per test

just sorted out my test kit again as I had to change CRS so the solution was no longer current, this time bought 4 250 ml CRS, 1L total and mixed them before rebottling. I hope this means my new solution won't have to be disposed of after just 4 brews, it should last 16 now.
