I mixed 20g of gelatin as per GW instructions in BYOBRA. I used the sheets. Today, a jelly like substance has formed on the surface of my brew. Should this be the case? I thought it would have all fallen to the bottom.
Should I stir it back in?
Cheers

OK. no responses, so I went on gut instinct and stirred it back in yesterday, Back on the surface today again.

Strange one Floyd - I haven't noticed it with my beer but have had it with my 'Cheeky Vimto'......Have you drawn any beer off to see if its cleared anyway? What temperature is is it?floydmeddler wrote:OK. no responses, so I went on gut instinct and stirred it back in yesterday, Back on the surface today again.Any advice out there?

Cheers for the reply bud. I drew some off and it is still very cloudy - at present I don't think there has been any effect from the gelatine. Stringy bits of the gelatine were visible in the glass too. Beer tastes perfect though!
Perhaps it will fall out? Hoping anyway... don't like the idea of beer jelly!

It sounds like the gelatine has actually made jelly before it has been able to mix with the beer. It may be to do with the strength mixed or the temperature. I have only used it a couple of times, but did notice it was easy to over heat it when dissolving it.

I'm hoping it's nothing to worry about. It's just a little bit at the top. Fingers crossed it will be OK.
Re: Gelatin stays on the surface??
What John said makes sense - it does say to avoid boiling water on my instructions. Perhaps that's where I went wrong. Why don't try you skimming it off the surface and rack off onto some fresh finings?

I boiled it then when it dropped to 85c, I added it to the gelatin. Don't know how it's happened. It isn't clearing either. Ah well, may rack it again like you suggested. Not today though. Cheers.
