First attempt at water treatment..crisis!!

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

First attempt at water treatment..crisis!!

Post by Rowang » Tue Jul 06, 2010 11:19 pm

Hi guys,

Im having my first crack at water treatment, since i like in an area with v hard tapwater. Previously iv used bottled water, which was a bit costly...

anyway, have filled my boiler to the brim, boiled for 30mins with gypsum and the calcium (chloride/carbonate? cant quite remember...whatever GW says..), and its cooling so I can rack it off the precipitate. Iv realised however...too late, since i want to brew tomorrow, that I now have less than 25L of treated water, no way enough for boil and sparge. What should I do? I dont have time to retreat more water... should I just use what I have topped up with boiled mineral water? Or just top up the final wort volume with mineral water?

Cheers!

Use the prepared water for the mash and use tap water treated with a campden taplet for the sparge.
It will be fine.
