Total alkalinity variations

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Total alkalinity variations

Post by Scotty » Fri Sep 17, 2010 12:57 pm

I first performed a test using the Sailfert test kit which resulted in a total alkalinity of 111.5 mg/l CaCO3. Today, I have done another test ahead of my first brew day tomorrow and the reading a have now is 25.5 mg/l.

Is it common for liquor to vary so much?

I'm brewing a pale ale so would anyone recommend any other treatments?

EDIT: I've just done a test on water that has sat in my HLT since yesterday when I was calibrating the volume and have got a reading of 82.5mg/l.
